Richard Bromley Biography
1960,
was a momentous year, the soviets shot down an American spy plane; John Kennedy
is elected
US
president; Chubby Checker introduces the Twist and Richard was born, just one
year after Barbie. Originally from
Birmingham
, he grew up in
Lichfield
, Armitage and Rugeley. Eager to leave school at the earliest opportunity
Richard undertook a four year apprenticeship, spending a further 5 years as a
Technician in Rugeley Power Station.
Late one night, haunted by feelings that there was
a God, Richard rode in his pyjama’s on his motorbike to John and Norma’s,
Christian leaders he had been introduced to and asked how to become a Christian?
His new faith in Christ soon led to a strong sense of calling to
Christian ministry. Running youth
programmes, detached youth projects, speaking in churches and attendance at Mini
Bible Schools at Capernwray enabled
him to test this calling in very practical ways.
In 1986, two years after marrying Denise, Richard left his job and
started training at
Moorlands
Training
College
in
Dorset
, studying evangelism and learning about escapology.
Richard’s first 5 years of ministry were spent in
Hull
, a great
Yorkshire
City
, where he led an innovative Youth for
Christ (YFC) team specialising in urban youth mission.
During this period a growing sense of calling to world mission let to him
taking the role of Training Director for YFC
Middle East, travelling widely throughout the Middle
East he set up projects as far apart as
Egypt
,
Jordan
and
Bahrain
. Here he developed a fond
appreciation of its culture, people and history, which still informs his work
today in his current role, the Director of Local Ministries for Youth
for Christ; overseeing the development and growth of the local YFC outreach
projects around the
UK
. He has earned a Masters Degree in
Mission
at Birmingham Christian College and has
enjoyed supervising and lecturing for the Centre
for Youth Ministry.
He was the chair of the influential "Reaching
and keeping tweenagers" report and workbook.
He coauthored the Grove booklet on "Young
People as Prophets" with Dave Wiles and Bishop Roger Sainsbury.
He writes a regular column for Youthwork magazine called Digital
Bytes. More recently Richard has trained at the Queens
Foundation Birmingham and is now Ordained in the Church of England and is
curate at St Bartholomews Church
Binley. He
sat on the Youthwork executive, Rejesus
board and is a Trustee for the Sophia
Network.
With Denise, his wife of 26 years, he relishes
spending time with Sarah(18) and Ryan(15), together they enjoy cycling and
travelling. At home he has a passion
for the “Good Life” with an allotment,
wormeries and various recycling schemes. He
is a long time member of Greenpeace.
He has a weakness for great coffee,
quality tea, french red wines and real ale.
