Richard Bromley Biography

1960, was a momentous year, the soviets shot down an American spy plane; John Kennedy is elected US president; Chubby Checker introduces the Twist and Richard was born, just one year after Barbie. Originally from Birmingham , he grew up in Lichfield , Armitage and Rugeley. Eager to leave school at the earliest opportunity Richard undertook a four year apprenticeship, spending a further 5 years as a Technician in Rugeley Power Station.

Late one night, haunted by feelings that there was a God, Richard rode in his pyjama’s on his motorbike to John and Norma’s, Christian leaders he had been introduced to and asked how to become a Christian?  His new faith in Christ soon led to a strong sense of calling to Christian ministry.  Running youth programmes, detached youth projects, speaking in churches and attendance at Mini Bible Schools at Capernwray enabled him to test this calling in very practical ways.  In 1986, two years after marrying Denise, Richard left his job and started training at Moorlands Training College in Dorset , studying evangelism and learning about escapology.

Richard’s first 5 years of ministry were spent in Hull , a great Yorkshire City , where he led an innovative Youth for Christ (YFC) team specialising in urban youth mission.  During this period a growing sense of calling to world mission let to him taking the role of Training Director for YFC Middle East, travelling widely throughout the Middle East he set up projects as far apart as Egypt , Jordan and Bahrain .  Here he developed a fond appreciation of its culture, people and history, which still informs his work today in his current role, the Director of Local Ministries for Youth for Christ; overseeing the development and growth of the local YFC outreach projects around the UK .  He has earned a Masters Degree in Mission at Birmingham Christian College and has enjoyed supervising and lecturing for the Centre for Youth Ministry.

He was the chair of the influential "Reaching and keeping tweenagers" report and workbook.  He coauthored the Grove booklet on "Young People as Prophets" with Dave Wiles and Bishop Roger Sainsbury.  He writes a regular column for Youthwork magazine called Digital Bytes.  More recently Richard has trained at the Queens Foundation Birmingham and is now Ordained in the Church of England and is curate at St Bartholomews Church Binley.  He sat on the Youthwork executive, Rejesus board and is a Trustee for the Sophia Network.

With Denise, his wife of 26 years, he relishes spending time with Sarah(18) and Ryan(15), together they enjoy cycling and travelling.  At home he has a passion for the “Good Life” with an allotment, wormeries and various recycling schemes.  He is a long time member of Greenpeace.  He has a weakness for great coffee, quality tea, french red wines and real ale.
